Tuition Carry forward after leaving and returning to NS

Hi There,

I previously moved to Ontario for school from 2017-2019. I stayed until 2021, filing taxes as an Ontario resident for 2020. I moved back to Nova Scotia in 2021, and filed Nova Scotia taxes in 2021.

It appears I still have approximately 30,000 of unused provincial tuition for carry over from 2019. I don't see any mention of provincial tuition credits on my 2021 NOA. Now that I am a Nova Scotia resident again, am I able to claim this on my tax return?

When you filed in Nova Scotia, did you claim your unused tuition from previous years? If not, you may want to go back and adjust your 2021 return to include it. Since you moved from another province, you'll only be able to claim your federal amount as your provincial amount, but it will be something, rather than nothing.

To make the changes, you can use ReFILE in TurboTax 2021, or the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA)’s My Account service, or fill out and mail in a T1-ADJ T1 Adjustment Request.
