Slow useless support. Spend 2.5 hours on the phone with tech support. Without a satisfactory solution. I couldn't get past the dependent information because I didn't want to lie. I said that my dependent had income (from a summer job). Didn't make enough to file taxes (according to CRA) but turbo tax was requiring me to file his taxes first (for $20) to report the net income line to get past my dependent information even though I said that I wasn't claiming dependent credits. Talked to two different support people, who both had to connect with their supervisors. They both implied that it was an error on my end but they couldn't figure it out either. One agent sent me to the end of the filing and worked backwards. To end up bypassing it. To file myself, my partner and my dependent was going to cost over $80. I ended up filing through a different online system for less then $40. Complete waste of time. It was clear that neither of the ladies that I talked to had any idea what they were doing and they were just going off a script and were reviewing the community pages. Will never use turbo tax again even though I had used them for decades.
Don't waste your time.
If your dependent earned income, then, as per the Canada Revenue Agency, you do have to file a tax return. TurboTax offers a free version for youths 25 and younger with a simple return or a version for $20 that offers the Assist & Review service, which allows them to get help from a tax expert for a minimal price.
In your return, if you are claiming your child as a dependent, then you do have to enter their income in the appropriate box, which would have been the amount of his T4 slip box 14 if that is all he had as income.
We are sorry you did not get the service expected from our support team, and we appreciate your feedback. It will be shared with the relevant department.
Thank you for choosing TurboTax
If a youth makes less then the basic personal amount, they are not required to file taxes. This info was found from two different websites, including turbo tax. My dependent was not charged income tax so there would be no refund either.
