Open TurboTax
Hi folks
I am trying to file my parents' tax and somehow the "medical profile" on the left hand side is grayed out and cannot be accessed. After I filled their donation information, TurboTax took me straight to "Tax On Split Income (TOSI)" and bypassed the "medical profile" section.
I managed to find a post here https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/tax-credits-deductions/discussion/turbotax-on-pc-why-can-t-i-enter...
But I do not know what is the "Box" the post speak of and I couldn't find Add Supporting Details. in both Easy Step and "Forms" mode.
I tried to manually put in their expense by entering "Forms Mode" but once I return to "Easy Step" mode, the medical expense section got greyed out again and currently the estimated Tax refund is currently at 0 (Zero).
On the other hand I was able to put my medical expenses for the portion of tax refund and my form is ready to be filed. (FYI, I am filing both my and my parents' taxes on the same computer and same account). I used this program for nearly 7 years and I never seen this before
For the locked profile issue, start from "Get Organized" and complete it, and continue from there to unlock each step.
Even if you enter the expenses in Forms Mode, the refund won't move if you haven't cleared the forms. For 2025/2026, you can only claim expenses that exceed 3% of their net income (or $2,834, whichever is lower).
If your parents earn $50,000, the first $1,500 of medical expenses is worth $0. Only the $1,501st dollar starts increasing the refund.
If your parents' tax wing is already $0 (because their income is low or they have other credits like the age amount), adding medical expenses will not increase the refund. You can't get back more tax than you actually paid.
If the issue still persists, we suggest you contact our Product support team. They have access to tools we don't have here in Community, like screenshare, and can investigate this issue for you.
Thank you for choosing TurboTax.
I tried start from "Get Organized" but the system just keep skipping the Medical Expense part for some reason.
My folks' medical expenses do exceed 3% of their net income from their pension and investment.
The "Tax Wing being mentioned in this quote : "If your parents' tax wing is already $0 (because their income is low or they have other credits like the age amount), adding medical expenses will not increase the refund. You can't get back more tax than you actually paid." . Is that the green number under "2025 Tax Refund"? (I suspect its not).
I'll try to contact TurboTax people on Monday Morning.
Thank you for your time.
