Hi,
This will be our first year filing after separation. We have typically filed jointly. I see that there is an option to select which person you want to file separately for.
What I need to understand is if you use the same Turbotax login to file the two separate returns? Or if you can transfer the spouse to another account to file separately? Or how the mechanics of it all works.
Thanks!
You can use the same TurboTax login details to file two separate returns, however, you would be able to see each other's personal information. You can prepare your return separately from your spouse. When you start your TurboTax Online return, when it asks "Who are you preparing this return for?" answer "Myself". You will still have to provide some basic info on your spouse, as well as their income.
There is no option to transfer the spouse to another account to file separately. If you want to have separate accounts, you would need to create a new account and start everything from scratch as TurboTax doesn't have the option to transfer returns or accounts. Please note, starting a new account means you won't have access to your previous returns nor you would be able to transfer it.
Thank you for choosing TurboTax.
