Need to migrate OLDER copies of INSTALLED TurboTax to a new Windows workstation

Because the registration servers for TurboTax that are older than a few years (5 years for Canada, IIRC) have been decommissioned, I can no longer conduct fresh installations on a new machine with the expectations that they can be functional. Because they cannot be properly registered, they will be unable to even open up old filings, much less create new ones.

For various reasons (that will be superfluous to this discussion, so I am not going to go over them) I need to be able to move the registration information / license keys for my copies of TurboTax from one workstation to another in order to ensure I still have fully-registered copies on the destination workstation that can open old and create new tax filings.

A VM will not be possible. I am looking for the registry entries (or encrypted files) that encapsulate the registrations/license-keys. And while I am not looking to copy over the software itself (I am fully expecting to conduct a reinstallation of all years), this may be useful if the registry entries cover everything the software requires such that a reinstallation is not strictly needed. After all, while I have seen update servers continue to function as expected for much longer (7+ years), they may not be functional all the way back.

Note:

  • This would involve the Canadian versions of TurboTax from 2010 onward.
  • The minimum reach-back desired is 7 years, but I am hoping to grab the entire stack for posterity’s/vanity’s sake.
  • I have been working with computers since 82, on the Internet since 88, on the Web since 92 and in the IT industry since 97. I can deal with technically-complex instructions and workflows at a high level, and I am definitely not a newb.
  • No, I have not (yet) found any TurboTax-specific info on this particular solution. Pretty much all explanations still expect the registration servers to be up and running in order to be successful -- which is not the case here.

Unfortunately, we no longer support those years, provide update or installers, as CRA wants the last 6 years saved.

You can have access to all tax package in PDF, on this link from CRA website.

If you need information from an older return and don't have the PDF archives saved for your records, you can get info through the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA)'s My Account service, or call them 1-800-959-8281 to request the info.

Thank you for choosing TurboTax.

This isn’t what I am asking for. I am asking for technical knowledge on how TT stores the registration information in Windows. This is typically done by a registry entry holding an encrypted hash of the license key.

I want to know where this registry key is, or at the very least what it is named, so I can move it over to the new workstation, and maintain the registered status of the software despite the registration servers no longer being functional.

@TurboTaxVeronique I am also in a similar situation to @rekabis .

I have been buying Turbotax since the 1990's.  While mostly I printed pdfs of my tax returns, I was not always vigilant.  I am missing a few.

I would like to be able to install some of these older years on my new computer so I can access the files that belong with them.  I never thought Intuit would remove that capability.

I would be happy with the last known installation file from Intuit.  I still have all of my turbotax software license keys.

I think it is a reasonable request.  Or at the very least the name of the last installation file for each year so I can search for that file in my legacy file system.

Thanks for any help on this.
