For all my T3 slips where I had an amount in box 21 ( I have several T3's - not all of them report a box 52 or 53)... I entered my T3 information is a specific way in order to get the error to clear).
I went in and deleted all my T3's and did a review to confirm that the error message was gone...
Then I entered the first slip - leaving out box 21 (and any box 52 / 53) info. I then ran the review to confirm there was no error message. I then went back in and entered the amount shown in box 21 - but I put that amount into box 52 first - then hit the back button - saw that the amount owing was adjusted to account for the capital gain. I then entered the same amount into box 21. I noted that the amount owing remained the same. I then went back to the review and verified that the error would not appear - it did not.
I then did this same process for all 7 of my T3 slips - placing the capital gain amount into box 52 in the exact same amount appearing in box 21 (as the splittling of the amount is inconsequential / not relevant as the tax change never took place... so you are only appeasing the buggy software by having the box 52 match box 21 - and by entering box 52 before box 21 - allows the software to perform the relevant calculations).
This years version of turbotax is very buggy - I have found a few other fields that will give you errors based on changing information in a box after the fact - where I had to go into the forms methods to override to clear them (example - splitting the performing arts credit with a spouse and then removing the option)... endless frustrations this year with turbo tax - makes me feel uncomfortable with whether my tax filing is accurate this year... don't want this to be what happened with people with the ontario child tax credit recently when this software glitched.
I installed Turbo Tax Standard Apr 25 so the issue still hasn’t been fixed in the software. Since the software has bugs, that prevented me from filing my tax return and wasn’t fixed in the month that it was reported, I should get a refund!
I have 4 T3s. For 3 of them, in box 53 (total capital gains), I entered the same amount as box 21.
The last T3, there was nothing to enter in box 21, so I entered $0.01 in box 21 & 53.
Then there were no more Turbotax errors so I was able to continue to NetFile my tax return successfully.
