Why are there federal and provincial tuition amounts being automatically claimed when I didn%27t go to school%3F

I am very confused as to why turbo tax is claiming federal and provincial tuition when I didn't go to school.

I have not indicated anywhere to do this. I have also double checked this anomaly and it seems to do this automatically. Any reasons why? What should I do?

Hi,

As a tax rule, tuition must be claimed so to reduce your taxes payable to $0. Even if you're transferring the amount to your spouse or parents, it must be claimed on your tax return first.

Tuition is also claimed before other tax credits (medical, charitable, interest on student loans, dividend tax credits and the foreign tax credit).

As such, if you have taxes payable, tuition will have to be claimed.
