How do I claim the Newfoundland and Labrador search and rescue volunteer tax credit?

by TurboTax Updated 2 weeks ago

A provincial tax credit is available to individuals in Newfoundland and Labrador who already qualify for the federal volunteer firefighters' amount (VFA) or the federal search and rescue volunteers' amount (SRVA).

Eligible volunteers with at least 200 hours of service can claim a $3,000 provincial nonrefundable tax credit in addition to their federal credit. Starting with tax year 2024, the federal credit amount is doubled to $6,000.

For more information on eligibility criteria, visit the CRA pages on the federal and provincial volunteers' amount.

  1. Answer the initial Personal info interview questions if you haven't already. This unlocks 2024 tax return.
  2. From 2024 tax return, under Add to your return, enter volunteer in the search bar and select Volunteer Firefighter / Search and Rescue Volunteer.
  3. At Volunteer firefighter and/or search and rescue volunteer credit, answer the questions.
  4. From 2024 tax return, select View detailed summary.
  5. At Detailed Tax Summary, at Line 31220 or 31240, you’ll see the credit amount. The provincial credit will automatically be applied to your return.

Note: Before you begin, fill out the Introduction/Profile portion of your return until you can access the PROFILE tab from the menu.

  1. From the menu, select PROFILE, then Personal tax profile.
  2. Select Continue twice to reach the third What happened for you in 2024? screen.
  3. Answer Yes to the question Were you a volunteer firefighter, a search and rescue volunteer...?
  4. Select Yes to one of the dropdown questions (Did you complete 200 hours of eligible volunteer firefighting services? or Did you complete 200 hours of eligible search and rescue volunteer services?), then select Continue.
  5. From the menu, select DEDUCTIONS & CREDITS, then Deductions summary.
  6. At Deductions summary, you’ll see the $3,000 ($6,000 for tax year 2024 and later) federal credit next to Other amounts. The provincial credit will automatically be applied to your return.
