Northern Residents Deduction for travel benefits: Claim this amount if all of the following apply:

  • You are eligible for the residency deduction;
  • You are employed in a prescribed zone; and
  • You received taxable travel benefits from employment in a prescribed zone that were included in your income.

Once you have determined you are eligible for the claim, in the Online Free version of TurboTax go to:

  • Deductions Tab
  • drop down to Other Deductions and select Northern Residents Deduction
  • enter your information and continue to the page Northern Residents Deduction - Trips

When you make your entries on this page, be sure to fill in all three boxes (as shown in the attached screenshot), the software will then apply the lowest of three.

The following CRA link explains in detail how to determine the "lowest return airfare", designated cities and splitting the amount in Box 32 if you take more than one trip.
