This is the first time I am using tubotax and filing myself. I am on Old Age Security (OAS), live in Manitoba and also get RentAssist. I am low-income. Last year, I got nearly $600 back. This year, despite having far more in medical expenses (allowable is almost $1,500) and having LESS income than last year, turbotax is showing a refund of only $32. I don't understand why the refund is so much less, and why, despite having allowable medical expenses, they do not seem to make any difference. Can anyone shed light on this?
While it can be frustrating, it’s common for the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) to make a tax return assessment that is different from yours.
The reasons for these discrepancies may vary, and can range from very simple (typo or data entry error, forgotten slip, receipt, amount, etc) to complex (carry-forward amounts not included, accounting errors, etc).
In most cases, the CRA will explain how they calculated your tax refund or balance owing, and you can find this information on your Notice of Assessment (NOA), under the heading Explanation of changes and other important information. Compare the line numbers on your NOA and their corresponding values with those entered into TurboTax.
I qualify for the Manitoba Renters' Tax Credit. I spoke with CRA this morning. And I have qualified for it for many years. However, I do not see anywhere in Turbotax to claim that tax credit and input the info on my rent and the landlord's name.
