Rental Question - Renovation

Would I able to claim a portion of the renovation, such as countertop, as rental expense from the previous year although previous year was principal residence? If so, how much would be considered appropriate?

Rental Question - Renovation

If the home was not being used as a rental in the previous year, you cannot claim any Current Expenses for it.

You might be able to claim large renovations as a Capital Expense and depreciate them by adding them to the cost base of the rental, but this has tax consequences as well. You need to determine if an expense is Current or Capital, and when you claim Capital Expenses (CCA or depreciation) on your Principal Residence, you can no longer claim the Principal Residence Exemption if you sell that property.
