Tax Filing for Stock Losses and Potential Audit

I am filing my taxes for 2024 and would like to claim losses from my stock trading that go back to 2021 and 2018. The estimated total refund amount is higher than in previous years. Will this trigger an audit from the CRA?

Under which category should I report my day trading stock losses? In TurboTax, I couldn’t find a category under self-employment to file losses from previous years.

If an audit occurs and I am found ineligible for those deductions, will there be a penalty?

If the losses were incurred in previous years, you would have to amend the returns for those years to include them. Then you can carry forward any unused losses.

There is no single place to put losses on the self-employment form. You enter your income & then your expenses, and if your expenses are greater than your income, you end up with a loss. If you are day trading, you would enter your stocks as inventory - how much you started with, how much you bought and how much your inventory was worth at the end of the year.

TurboTax Online for 2021 and earlier are no longer available, so you can't use Refile to amend your returns for 2021 or 2018. But, you can still can make the adjustments using the Canada Revenue Agency’s (CRA) My Account service or you can print & mail a T1-ADJ T1 Adjustment Request.
