What is the Use of TTN (Temporary Tax Number)?

I have asked a query regarding the use of dummy SIN (000 000 000) or TTN for my wife who is on visitor record with me.

Please guide me on this, thanks!

It's called an Individual Tax Number (ITN) and the use of this form is from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). An ITN is a nine-digit number issued to non-resident individuals who need an identification number but who are not eligible to obtain a social insurance number (SIN).

So can I use ITN as SIN for filing my wife Income tax?

Yes. However, the TTN number usually starts with an 8 or 9 number. You cannot file a separate return with a dummy SIN number of zeros nor you can prepare a couple-return with a spouse who has this zeros SIN number. You can prepare a separate return for you as married and add your wife's information in the return.

If you have already started the returns as two returns for married couples filing together, you will not be able to delete her return. You will have to start a new return as married but choose "file separately" not "together".

I hope this was helpful
