Why can't I do a spousal return instead of an individual return???

You can, but you have to indicate that you want to prepare your returns together when you start the return. The first page asks if you want to prepare the return for yourself, a spouse or someone else. There’s no way in TurboTax Online to add a spouse after you have started. You would need to select “Start A New Return” from under “My Account & Returns” in the left side menu and start over.
