Troubleshooting

In TurboTax Online, I am able to enter an IRS form 1099-R with a box 1 amount and a box 2a amount.  The box 1 amount exceeds the box 2a amount by $2,650.

In TurboTax Online, I followed these steps:

  • Down the left side of the screen, click on Federal.
  • Down the left side of the screen, click on Wages & income.
  • Scroll down to Retirement Plans Social Security.  Click the down arrow to the right.
  • Click Start / Revisit to the right of IRA 401K Pension Plan Withdrawals.
  • At the screen Did you get a 1099-R in 2025?, select Yes.
  • At the screen Who gave you a 1099-R, I selected Financial institution or other provider (1099-R).  Click Continue.
  • At the screen Enter your 1099-R details, I entered the box 1 and box 2a amounts.  I entered distribution code 7 in box 7.  Click Continue.
  • At the screen Is the IRA/SEP/SIMPLE box on this 1099-R checked, I selected No.  Click Continue.
  • At the screen Where is your distribution from, I selected Qualified government or public pension.  Click Continue.
  • At the screen What kind of retirement plan do you have, I selected Qualified plan (most common).  Click Continue.
  • At the screen Was this distribution from a 403(b) plan?, I selected Yes.  Click Continue.
  • At the screens Annuity Information, I selected Yes to Periodic payments, then No to start receiving payments in 2025, then Yes for the years you received these distributions, was the total amount shown on the form the amount you paid tax on?

The tax return was able to pass Review.
