Hi there, what are the steps required to claim the 20% discount offered by CIBC for CIBC clients? (https://www.cibc.com/en/special-offers/turbotax-discount.html)

1- Yes, you can find many affiliates with a discounted TurboTax price- But with each one, although they are there in google, it specifies "Enjoy a 20% discount on TurboTax, just for CIBC clients. Keep more of your money this tax season. TurboTax helps you get your maximum refund."

This will have their customers sign into their accounts to find the link in order to get the discounted price. This is what the affiliates do, this is not TurboTax.

Therefore, you would need to log into your CIBC account- click on the link provided and it will bring you to the page which will show you which TurboTax software you can have discounted, and choose the one that you need. Complete your return and once you get to the payment page, it will show you the discounted amount.

Once you click on File today- you will log into your TurboTax Online account and

start a new return- Then click on the boxes which apply to you on the page "Which of these applied to you in 2023?" TurboTax will then tell you which product you will need to purchase. I posted a screenshot after I tried it and it shows the amount at the discounted price.

Yes, you will need to start a new return if you started without clicking on the link.

Once you start a new return after the information section you can then go delete the old return- you will see a garbage can beside it.

When you have completed your income tax return and once on the payment page it changed to full price- which can and usually only happens if the discount period is over - It will be to the discretion of the agent and their team as what they do in these cases.  Can you please explain what you mean by sending you a refund manually?

Thank you for choosing TurboTax.

Hi Susan, thanks for the reply. I have some more details that might clarify my specific situation, and some follow-up questions:

  • The link was not sent to me via email; I found it via google search
  • I was not signed into my CIBC account when I clicked 'File Today'
  • I've already started but have not yet completed my 2023 tax return via the TurboTax portal.

Questions:

  • Must I be signed into my CIBC account in the same browser when I click the 'File Today' button?
  • Must I be signed into my TurboTax during the same browser session?
  • Must I delete my current return and start a new 2023 tax return for the discount to be applied?
  • In the event that the discount is not applied when I go to pay, after completing a draft of my full tax return, can I ask the support team to send me a refund manually?

Thanks for entertaining the above scenarios, I just want to ensure that the system applies the discount, even though there was no confirmation on my end, cheers.

Cheers

Hi @TurboTaxBrenda thanks for the detailed reply; as you suggested I :

-signed into CIBC, then

-clicked on File Today, and was redirected and signed into TurboTax, then

-started a new return; and I believe I saw the discounted price ($88 for Assist & Review Self-Employed)

It seems like the discount will be applied; will update this thread when I get to the payment page.

Re: Sending a refund manually - I meant that in the scenario that the CIBC discount is not automatically applied by TurboTax software at checkout, if the TurboTax support team would issue a refund (in the amount of the discount) at their discrection (i.e., bypassing the automated discount provided by the TurboTax software).

Wishing the support staff a smooth tax season, cheers.
