As per our TurboTax article: Your Complete Guide to the T4A Tax Slip
If you receive a T4A with Box 20 or Box 48 amounts, you are indeed self-employed for tax purposes as both of these boxes are used exclusively to report self-employment income. You’re either a contractor or you’ve earned income from commission-based activities.
Having a T4A with Box 20 or 48 means that you’re required to complete a bit of extra info at tax time. Since you’re self-employed, you’ll complete the business form T2125 – Statement of Business Activities. The upside is you can also claim expenses to offset that income on that form. More information can be found in this TurboTax article: Guidelines for reporting Self-Employment Income.
For additional information please see our TurboTax FAQ: Why did I have to upgrade my TurboTax Online edition?
Thank you for choosing TurboTax.
OK - thanks.
It’s T4A (OAS) and T4A (P) that we’re getting.
I’m unable to get back to make changes in the personal information. This used to be so much easier in previous years.
Also- why does TurboTax not tap into last year's info? Why must I set it all up from start again?
In doing so, I made an error on T4A designations and now can’t correct it unless I upgrade to Self Employed at extra $30.
I think I'm going to switch to [a competitor] this year. Frustrated!!
Please advise. Thank you.
When you see the message that you need to upgrade, you can click the Back button on the bottom right of the page. It should take you back to the slip that you were filling out. Then you can click on the Back button again to get to the summary page. There you can delete the slip if it’s not needed. Finally, you can select Income>T-Slips>T-Slip Summary from the left side menu to go to a page where you can select which slips you need or uncheck anything you don’t need.
As for why TurboTax is not using your information from last year – when you started, did you choose a return from last year to transfer information from? If you are using TurboTax Online, you would be asked that right at the beginning of the return, if there are any returns from last year in the account.
