When I enter that I paid $36,000 in spousal support, at 100% deducible, my refund only went up by $50. That doesn't seem right.

When I enter that I paid $36,000 in spousal support, at 100% deducible, my refund only went up by $50. That doesn't seem right.

Spousal support (if allowable), is a deduction from your Net Income, not a refundable credit. It doesn't directly add to your refund or reduce the amount that you have to pay. Instead it reduces the amount of income that is taxable, and possibly allows you to claim credits that are based on income (which are usually for low income taxpayers).
