What portion of my vehicle maintenance expenses can I claim when I use my personal vehicle to run my small business?

As per our TurboTax article Claiming Automobile Expenses If the vehicle is also used for personal transportation, you must track the percentage of use and kilometers driven in each situation. Allowable automobile expenses for the deduction are the costs of running and operating your car.

 

To enter your vehicle expenses in our Online software, follow the steps below.

  1. Sign in to your return.
  2. Click on Find (magnifying glass) at the top right corner of the screen.
  3. Write self-employment then click Go
  4. On the Let's look at your self-employment income and expenses screen select Yes then click on Continue.
  5. You will either Edit or Enter New Business and follow the prompts.
  6. When you reach the review your self-employment income and expenses screen click on
     
     

    Motor vehicle expenses (including interest and leasing costs)  

  7. From here follow the prompts and always click on Continue or Done at the bottom of the screens to save your information.
