If you've recently lost a loved one, we'd like to first offer our sincere condolences for your loss.

The following are step-by-step instructions for filing taxes for a deceased person using various versions of TurboTax:

TurboTax Online:

  1. When starting the return process, select Someone Else to the question Let’s get started. Who are you preparing this return for?
  2. Enter the name of the deceased and indicate that you're preparing the return for someone who has passed away
  3. Enter their date of death, then select Continue
  4. Complete the next sections of their return until you reach Let's get the rest of your personal info, where you'll need to provide additional personal information for the deceased. Select Continue once you've completed this section
  5. Answer questions about their residency, then select Continue
  6. Because a final return needs to be signed and mailed in, you'll then be asked for your mailing address and contact information. Be sure to enter your name under Care of
  7. Select Continue on each screen until completed

TurboTax CD/Download:

  1. When starting the return process in EasyStep mode, enter the marital status and province where the deceased lived right before their date of death
  2. Enter their personal information and date of death
  3. Enter the mailing address of where the notice of assessment should be sent
  4. Enter the information of the spouse/common-law partner (if applicable), including their net income and Amount on line 8 of their provincial schedule 428
  5. Proceed until the What happened for you in 20XX? section. Select the type of income you're reporting for the deceased. If you're reporting income that's eligible for splitting, the software will calculate the eligible amount to be transferred to the spouse/common-law partner. This amount will be reported separately on the partner’s tax return
  6. If you're transferring a principal residence to the spouse/common-law partner, enter information about the purchase price and fair market value on the date of death. Select Yes to the questions Was the property disposed of as a result of death?
  7. Select who the property is transferred to
  8. You can check the information you've entered by selecting Forms mode from the menu
  9. In Forms mode, select Forms from the bottom toolbar, then select T1-General

Before you start, make sure you have all available T-slips and income information available for the deceased, as well as their date of death (DOD) and personal information. You'll refer to these documents while preparing their final return.

Thank you for choosing TurboTax.

If I have previously used turbotax for a person , how do I do their taxes if they passed away in 2022? I can't see a spot to indicate they are dead

Thank you for the detailed reply but since I have previously did taxes for my father, he has a turbotax profile.  If I use his profile from last year I am not able to indicate he has died.  It just loads the pertinent information that I need from last year and skips the question about being deceased.  It makes me think I have to start a new profile for my father as if I have never used turbotax for him before.  Is that correct?

@caldwell56239331 If you are using TurboTax Online and have transferred your father’s information from last year, then it will not show you the option to say he is deceased, as it assumes it’s him doing his taxes for himself.

Instead of transferring the info from last year, click on the “Create A Different Return” button. Then when it asks who you are preparing the return for, select “Someone else”. Doing it this will eventually give you the option to indicate that your father has passed away.
