I opened a Spousal RRSP and now find my contributions exceed my limit so I am not getting anything close to the 45% return. Since we share the same bank account and are in fact paying jointly can those contributions be claimed on my spouses' return even though I am listed as contributor and her as beneficiary? When I enter it that way into Turbo tax it gives a larger refund. Thank you.
The spouse that contributed to a spousal RRSP is the one that can claim the deduction on his/her income tax return. If you do not have the RRSP room to claim the deduction on your income tax return, you may want to consider withdrawing the amount and having your spouse contribute the amount to her return.
