I received a 2015 performance bonus at the end of Feb 2016 which I rolled directly into my RRSP. For some reason (stupidity) I didn't think I could claim the contribution and filed my 2016 return without including the receipt that was provided. Given that it was paid in the first 60 days of 2016 can I just apply it to my 2017 tax return as a regular contribution? I have available contribution space.
Similarly, I am about to receive my 2017 performance bonus at the end of Feb 2018 which I hope to deposit directly into my RRSP once again. Can I make the deposit at the end of February but not claim the receipt until I file my 2018 taxes? The 2017 bonus contribution will put me over the 2017 contribution limit if I can't defer it until 2018.
Thank you very much,
J
You will need to file an adjustment to your 2016 income tax return to report the RRSP contribution and can then choose to carry it forward to 2017.
