Claiming moving expenses for students

When you claim moving expenses for full time university student moving to their residence are you only allowed to claim your own meal amounts or also the people who helped you move where you paid for their meals as a thank you.

Thanks

Claiming moving expenses for students

The meals and accommodations claimed are for the people who actually moved (you and family members) not for the people who helped with the move.

you have to be careful with student moving expenses. The conditions are:

  • To attend a full-time program

  • Change of a residency for the period claimed. A student who leaves personal belongings at their parents' house or their own house and move temporarily for a semester or two to a new location then comes back to the old location cannot claim moving expenses.

  • A source of income in the new location. The scholarship for a full-time student is now fully exempted, so you can't claim the moving expenses against the scholarship. They need some source of income.

I hope this was helpful
