I use a room at home for office space (self employed). The room is not exclusively used for work. It is used 1 hour/24hr day if I average the hours worked in that room over a year.
According to the CRA if the room is used exclusively for business, then eligible expenses are based on (area of room/total home area = 1/10 in my case).
However if the room is a shared space, the CRA says you have to calculate the number of hours/week the room is used for business purposes ( in my case: 1/24).
So the eligible business related expenses are: (1/10) x (1/24) x expenses.
Question: I have TurboTax Basic and it assumes that the room is exclusively used for business (input only room area/home area). There is no input for shared space situations where the time that the room is used for business (in my case 1/24) is factored into the calculation.
Am I missing something here?
To calculate your percentage; take the area or number of rooms you use for business purposes divide by the total area or number of rooms in your home. Multiply that result by the number of hours in the day you use your home for business purposes divided by 24. And then, multiply that result by the number of days you use your home for business purposes divided by 365.
To enter the calculation above, enter 100 in the Total area or rooms in the home. Enter the percentage calculated in the Area or number of rooms, of the workspace.

Thank you. So there is no explicit way to input into TurboTax the time factor for shared workspace? I calculate the percentage based on your calculations above, then input that percentage into TurboTax assuming that the room is used exclusively for business. Just to confirm, as an example:
1 room for business/10 rooms in the house = 1/10 = 0.1
6 hours in a day using the room as workspace/24 = 6/24 = 0.25
146 days in a year using the room as workspace/365 = 0.4
Percentage (0.1) x (0.25) x (.4) x 100 = 1%
Input into Turbo Tax for shared workspace situations:
total area or rooms in the home = 100
area or # of rooms for the work space = 1 (BTW if this turns out to be a fraction, then TurboTax does not allow for fractions for this input - do we round up?)
Suggestion: TurboTax should ask whether the work space is shared. If yes, then there should be inputs for the hours/24 and days/365 so there can be an explicit accounting for this.
Let me know if I've missed something. Thanks so much.
Yes, the percentage would be about 1%, and no, it won't let you enter fractions. Just whole numbers.
As for your suggestion, it's appreciated. Unfortunately, TurboTax Basic only includes the T2125 form, which is as close as possible to the CRA form. So, unless the CRA changes their form, it's not going to change in TurboTax Basic. They might add it to Home & Business someday, though.
