how to delete a tax return in Turbo Tax

In TurboTax Online, click on “My Returns”, then “View All Tax Returns” on the left side menu to see all your returns. Then click on the small trash can icon to the right of the return that you want to delete.

To help make sure users don’t accidentally delete a return they’re working on, TurboTax prevents users from deleting their most recent “active” return. So, unfortunately, there is no way to delete a return if there is only one return in the account.

However, if you no longer want to use TurboTax Online, you can have your entire account deleted, along with any information (including Filed returns) that is still stored in that account. To do this, contact our customer care team and let them know you want to deactivate your online account.

In the TurboTax App, tap on the 3-line icon in the top left. Then tap on “My Returns”, then “View All Tax Returns” on the left side menu to see all your returns. Find the return that you want to delete and tap “Delete” under its name.

In TurboTax CD/Download, please close the program. Then in Windows, navigate to the location of the tax file you want to delete. The files are usually stored in Documents>TurboTax>2020 (or whatever year you are working on). Find the tax file that you want to delete and then drag it to the Windows Recycle Bin. When you empty the Recycle Bin, the file will be permanently deleted.
