If I have a very low income, and paid $300 in taxes over the year, is it possible to get a larger return than $300?

I also know a person who works part time, gets paid by cash or cheque by various people and pays no taxes at all, but every year gets a tax refund.

It entirely depends on the individual’s situation.

  • Are they married?

  • Do they have dependants?

  • Do they, their spouse or their dependants have a disability?

  • Are they eligible for the Working Income Tax Benefit or other refundable credits.

  • What province do the live in?

  • Etc…

FYI: Even if you get paid by cash or cheque, you still have to report that income.
