Open TurboTax
Turbotax wouldn’t let me Netfile because I didn’t have the right “industry code” on the T5013. I didn’t need to enter these codes last year and they are not printed on the T5013 forms that I received. When I google the topic, I am told it is not normally required for a tax return. When I enter codes derived from my Google search, even though I was told they were Canadian, they didn’t work, and the CRA says “if you are filing your return electronically, you have to use the industry codes from your tax preparation software”. However Turbotax does not indicate which codes it will accept via a drop down box. Also, Turbotax asks for an industry code but doesn’t specify whether it means an SIC code or an NAICS code. Furthermore, the Turbotax help feature was not very helpful
I eventually discovered a Canadian version of the NAICS code and was ultimately successful. For those that are interested, I used 531390 for Brookfield Infrastructure and 912910 for Brookfield Renewables.
I think there is room for improvement in the software on this topic and if you add new requirements such as a mandatory entry of these codes, you should highlight the changes and provide some help.
I have passed on your comments & suggestions to our product development team. Thank you for your input.
