Open TurboTax
I am a Windows 10 user. Suddenly I cannot open previous tax returns on my PC without an activation code which have long been lost. Why is this and what can I do
If your software is suddenly asking for re-activation, it’s likely due to a "new machine" detection triggered by a recent system change. Desktop tax software typically links its activation code to your specific hardware configuration. When a significant Windows 10 update alters your system files—or if there has been a change in your USB devices or internal hardware—the software may no longer recognize your computer and assume it is being installed on a different device.
After reviewing your account, I wasn't able to locate any direct purchases from Intuit, which suggests your software was likely bought through a retail store or a third-party website. Because these transactions happen outside of our system, we don't have access to your specific purchase records or license codes.
To resolve this, you will need to contact our phone support team with your proof of purchase or receipt handy. Once they verify your retail purchase, they can assist you in generating a new license code (depending on the tax year).
Thank you for choosing TurboTax.
