When I added my older kids' (20 &17yrs) tax info, my refund decreased. I didn't expect that - why would that be?

Of course the refund increased again when I added my 17 yr old as an eligible dependent and added both of their tuition, but I don't understand why it decreased in the first place. Would it be better to leave them off my taxes entirely and let my ex claim the deductions instead?
