Why tax on $40000 3x lower than tax on $ 29000 ?

Turbo tax  says  My tax on  income of $40000 is about 500$ and that on My wife's  of 29000 4 is 1500 $ . can anyone explain ? (my  mistake?)

Not really, without looking at the returns.  It could be that you had more income tax taken off and as a result owe less. You might have deductions for expenses that are transferred from one household member to another, you could have entered something wrong, either too little or too much.
