There's no reason not to claim the full Home buyers' amount. If you are claiming the credit for just yourself, you would put in the full $10,000. If you are splitting the credit with a spouse/partner or another eligible person, you would claim your portion of the amount, and the other person (or persons) would claim the rest. The total claim for all of you would be $10,000.
