Hello, I began my tax return and indicated that I am common-law. The tax return is asking for documents from both of us; however, we fill our taxes separately and I only need to file my own taxes. How do I go about updating my tax return for just myself?
Unfortunately, once you have started preparing your returns together, there is no way to separate the returns. You’ll need to create a new return if you want to prepare your returns separately.
Also note, if you are married or common law, you’ll still need to provide some of your spouse’s information even if you are preparing your returns separately.
