Turbotax requires an upgrade to continue but I don't - help!

Hello,

I am helping my parents with their return. They are retired and have a very simple return, with only T4A, T4A(P), T4A(OAS), and T5007 forms to fill out. The previous year, my mom had some medical expenses (which would require an upgrade) but not this year, and so i unselected it. However, the site still insists that I upgrade. From what I've read, my parents should be able to file for free with only these forms to fill out, but there is no option to continue without upgrading. Please advise. Thank you.

If you used something other than Free last year, when you transfer your parent's info into a 2024 return, it will automatically put you back in the same version you used last year. Also, if your mother had any unused medical expenses, that would transfer over as well, causing the need for an upgrade. To prevent this from happening, you would need to start a new return without transferring info.

To do this, start a new return, by selecting “Start a New Return” from under “My Returns” in the bottom left corner. Then select "Create A Different Return" at the bottom to start a completely empty return.

Once you have started your new return, you can select “View All Returns” from under “My Returns”. Then delete the unwanted return by clicking the small Trash Can next to it or “Delete” under the return’s name.
