Will Turbotax 2025 continue to work with Windows 10 next year?

Microsoft has indicated that Windows 10 will continue to operate but that it will not be supported. I am too old to change to Windows 11.

TurboTax Online will likely still work with Windows 10, but we don't recommend using Windows 10 as Microsoft will no longer be providing security updates for that version of Windows.

TurboTax Desktop for 2025 will only work on Windows 11 computers.

More worries. Will my last 6 years of Turbotax (Canada) returns, made with Windows 10, open with Windows 11 ?

Also, can you clarify how “Turbotax on line” would work on a desktop P.C. using Windows 10.

or

Is "Turbotax on line" just the way of delivery into my desktop? I will be continuing to use Windows 10; too advanced in age to consider a replacement.

TurboTax Desktop 2018 and onwards should work on Windows 11. If you can upgrade your computer to Windows 11, then they should continue working as usual, but if you have to get a new PC to use Windows 11, you would need to reinstall the software and transfer over your files. 

TurboTax Online is different from TurboTax Desktop, but it still allows you to prepare & file your taxes. You can use TurboTax Online on any PC or Mac with a current web browser. No installation is required, you just need to login to the website for the year that you are working on. You may also have to enter an activation code if you buy a multi-return package, but that usually only needs to be done once per year. 

You won't be able to open your previous year's returns from TurboTax Desktop in TurboTax Online, though you can still transfer the info from a previous year into a new return. You can save PDF files of your TurboTax Desktop returns so that you can view the information, even if you no longer have the Desktop program installed. You are forcing your users to update Windows version 10 to Windows 11. In order for me to do that I will need to update my machine, which is working perfectly well. Sooooo, if I want to continue using your product, I have to shell out lots of money and time. I take this as a very faintly disguised extortion on Microsoft part!! Outside of that I have used Windows 11 and find it to be a useless, overly bloated piece of crap. To say noting of the articles I have read about it. Does more harm then good. NO THANK YOU I will pass.

The only option you have given me is to do it on-line, something that I am NOT comfortable doing.

I assume you have written security code into that website, perhaps you can write security code into the Desktop version. Or just let your users own web security take care of it.

@SternSteve121 TurboTax Desktop is run on your computer and stores files on your storage devices. Since Microsoft is no longer going to support Windows 10 (or Windows 8, or 7) with security updates, we can't risk having our customers entering their sensitive tax data on a computer environment that is no longer secure. That's why we are dropping support for TurboTax Desktop on Windows 10. 

TurboTax Online runs and stores data on our servers, which are run at the same level of security that banks & other financial institutions use. Because it's browser based, you will still be able to use TurboTax Online on a Windows 10 computer if you're using a browser that still supports Windows 10, though we don't recommend it. 

Another option is to use the TurboTax mobile app on your iOS or Android device. The mobile app uses the same servers as TurboTax Online.

Same here. The one and only thing I use windows for is Turbotax and that is now officially over as of now. I will just use spreadsheets. If they cant put security into the app itself, and need the OS,  then its not secure anyway.

P.S. unless these idiots are unaware many of us cant even upgrade to Win 11 because of the TPM requirement which means a new PC. 

P.P.S If intuit ever gets hacked I am sure there is no recourse except one of the useless 1 year security watch programs and sorry email. NO THANKS

Microsoft made the decision to end free technical support and security updates for the Windows 10, and that's why TurboTax Desktop 2025 will only run on Windows 11. 

TurboTax Desktop is a Windows application, and like all Windows applications, it requires Windows components to run. It also saves your return files to your computer. So, if your Windows computer isn't secure, then there's not much we can do, other than stop you from running TurboTax on an operating system that it's manufacturer no longer supports. With TurboTax Online, our servers run and store the software using bank level security. But you still access it using a web browser, which like any other Windows applications, needs parts of the OS to run. 

The Trusted Platform Module (TPM) chip was introduced in 2003 and is designed to provide hardware-based, security-related functions. The current version is TPM 2.0, which began to be included on computers in 2014 and even Windows 7 can use it (with an official patch). Windows 11 is the first version of Windows that *requires* TPM 2.0, which is why it can’t be installed on many older machines.
