My 21 year old attends school and works but did not pay much tax last year is now will be getting $2200 back does this make sense?
It would be hard to say without going into his actual details. However, one thing you may want to check is if the “Working Income Tax Benefit”. As a student he would most likely not be eligible for this benefit. However, the TurboTax software may have given him this credit when you put his low income in before adding his tuition information.
If you are using TurboTax Online:
Click “Find” and search for “Working”, then select “Working Income Tax Benefit” from the list and click on the “Go” button. Select “No” next to the question “Do you want to see if you qualify for the Working Income Tax Benefit?”. Click the “Continue” button to save.
If you are using TurboTax CD/Download:
The fastest way to get to this benefit is through forms. The WITB is on Schedule 6, Working Income Tax Benefit (Line 391). The WITB amount determined on Schedule 6 is claimed on line 453 of your tax return.
