opt out of disability tax credit

I would like to choose to claim 100% of medical expenses for my client rather than using the disability tax credit (which client is approved for and has been claiming for a few years) as with nursing home and other medical costs it is more beneficial to claim those costs rather than using the DTC plus a $10K limit on care expenses. How do I select to NOT claim the DTC within the Turbotax program without overriding on the DTC form or T1 line 31600? Assume if I override to set the DTC claim to 0, I will not be able to efile this return.

To opt out of the Disability credit, you just have to say no to the question at the top of the DTC form.

Yes, thanks, it makes sense that this will work, but I don't think that solution is ideal as this statement is not true... he does have a significant physical impairment. However, as long as it doesn't affect being able to use the DTC in future if needed (which it shouldn't as the DTC application has been filed and accepted) it should be ok. Appreciate the prompt response!

I have exactly the same issue, Turbo Tax "solution" is just a work around that is not true. Client is disabled. Concern is that may impact future years claims. Turbo tax needs an amendment to program to not claim DTC.

I've considered claiming DTC and $10,000 of medical expenses then filing an amendment with CRA, not claiming DTC and then claim full medical expenses.

I have a similar issue, with an additional wrinkle. My mom has home care in the amount of $22K, and the CRA does not allow both the DTC and expenses to be claimed, as per their table on the CRA website.

So it is advantageous NOT to claim the DTC and claim the home care expenses of 22K, I think. But how to do this without lying on the Turbo Tax form? I don't mind finagling the software, but I don't want to lie to the CRA, even if it is a white lie.

DEAR SUPPORT PERSON: If I check the box in the worksheet as suggested, will this information be uploaded to the CRA?

@Paulie476 The DTC form in TurboTax Desktop is not a CRA form, it's a worksheet that TurboTax uses to do the calculation for Line 31600 – Disability amount for self. If you say No to that top question asking if you have a physical impairment, then Line 31600 is not calculated and the Disability amount is not claimed. The only information that the CRA gets is Line 31600 = $0.
