I am beginning to prep my parent's taxes. My father passed away last May so I have to file separate returns. When I am using easy step, early in the process it asks for income info for the other spouse (widow) but I don't know those figures until I complete the widows return. But the widows return also asks for income info for the deceased person. So it seems like I have to skip those pages for spousal income info and go back to them after I know the final figures for each spouse. Those pages should happen after you determine taxable info for each spouse. Am I missing something or do others have similar issues?
First, we would like you to know we are sorry for your loss.
You are right, you must file separate returns. Spouse's income is used to calculate certain credits on the income tax return for the period they were a couple. This is why the spouse's income may be needed to calculate certain credits.
When you don’t know all the information yet, you just must take a note on the side of the information needed and continue the profile/enter the income. Then you'll do the same for the deceased spouse return. We understand you'll have to navigate from one return to another and this is why we suggest taking note of the missing information you'll need and avoiding to many backs and forth.
Here, on this FAQ you'll find some articles that may helped you.
Thank you for choosing TurboTax.
That is sort of what I was anticipating. Just a thought for the suggestion box....
If you are filing two separate returns for spouses, there should be an option to link the tt24 files so that the cross info needed self populates. Or allow them to be filed jointly and then unlink them at the end of all the entries.
I will pass on your suggestion to our product development team. Thank you for your input.
