using TurboTax standard. Why does the software not show my taxes payable? Just what I have entered as income and deductions.

If you are in EasyStep Mode You should be able to see your amount payable/refund in the top left corner. You can also look at the bottom of the detailed tax summary.

In Forms Mode a separate window will show, usually on the left. You can open it by selecting View > Summary > Graphical Tax Summary.
