T4A line 105 scholarship included in line 13010

Hello,

Both me and my partner (filing together) have scholarship funds we recieved as students. I recieved mine as a full time student, and so it should be tax exempt. They recieved theirs as a part-time student, so theirs should be partially tax exempt.

I have placed each amount correctly in T4A line 105 to indicate whether it should be considered taxable or not (according to the T2202 forms we recieved). However, for my return, it is still included in line 13010 as if it were taxable. For my partner's return, there is nowhere to include calculations to show the partial excemption based on education costs.

I am going based on these sources to guide my understanding of taxes:

https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/individuals/topics/about-your-tax-return/tax-re...

I'm not sure how to actually indicate that the amounts we recieved are not/only partly taxable.

I am also not able to review past forum comments on the same issue for some mysterious reason.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Try these steps: Go back to the T4A entry page.

Look for the "Box 105" dropdown: Do not put the amount in the first field labelled "Other scholarships... (Taxable)."

Select this specific option: "Full-time scholarship: also have T2202 with months in Box C."

The T2202 Link: Ensure you have already entered your T2202. If you have "0" months in the full-time box of the T2202, the software will ignore your "Full-time" selection on the T4A and dump the money back into Line 13010.

Check the Summary: After saving, Line 13010 should drop to $0. If it doesn't, try deleting the T4A slip entirely and re-entering it manually (auto-fill sometimes "locks" the taxable status).

For Your Partner (Part-Time Student)

Part-time students are only exempt up to the total of Tuition + Program Materials + $500 basic exemption. TurboTax Free hides this calculation.

The T4A Entry: Select the option for "Part-time scholarship: also have T2202 with months in Box B."

Where to enter expenses: This is likely where you're stuck. To claim the "partial" exemption for books or equipment:

Use the "Find" (magnifying glass) tool at the top and type "Scholarship Exemption."

This should take you to a dedicated "Scholarship Exemption Worksheet" or a "Student Expenses" page.

Enter the costs of books/materials here. TurboTax will then take [Scholarship Amount] - [Tuition] - [Books] - [$500] and only put the remainder on Line 13010.

Important: If their tuition plus books is more than the scholarship, Line 13010 should be $0.
