Tuition Amount - turbotax forcing claim option and not allowing transfer or Carry Forward (Schedule 11 + T2202 + easystep)

Have over 4000 in tuition credits for 2019. Turbotax is forcing claim option and not allowing transfer or Carry Forward in schedule 11.

Bought standard package from Costco - includes CD and DOWNLOAD option. Tried both and used easy step and manual options. Also manually entered data and downloaded from CRA website. Same results regardless of what options were used.

If only T2202 data entered and no T4 then the schedule 11 fields can be edited, but no edits allowed after t4 data is entered.

No problem with Turbotax 2018 and prior years, did the CRA rules change in 2019 or is this a Turbotax change?

Unfortunately, you cannot choose to carry forward your tuition amounts. This is a CRA rule that has been in place for many years. You must claim your tuition, education, and textbook amounts in the year they are incurred and you must claim this amount in the first year you have a tax payable.

This means if you have to use any of the tuition amounts this year to reduce your tax payable, they will be applied to your return automatically by CRA, even if you attempt to carry them forward.

TurboTax will apply the needed amount to reduce your tax payable to zero this year and carry forward any excess to future years. Then CRA will automatically apply as needed. If you can use all your credits in a particular tax year, you are required to do so. You cannot spread them out over a number of years or wait to claim them.

I have tuition fees claimed this year and will receive tax refunds, I don't see TurboTax automatically applying the excess tuition credits to carry forward field.  How can I fill out Schedule 11 by using TurboTax for specifying the carry-forward amount?

When you go to Forms View, you will fill this area of Schedule 11 and should see the Carry-forward amount at line 25.

Thank you for choosing TurboTax.
