TurboTax not generating a Quebec Schedule S

Hello All -

First time filing in Quebec.  Same for our university age son.

Our son had income from an internship.  His Quebec tax bill was reduced to zero without needing to use university tuition.  After filing, we learned that his return should have a Schedule S - which enables him to specify how much tuition to transfer to a parent.   For some reason, TurboTax is did not generate this.

Question 1: We'll need to have our son file an Amended Return which includes a Schedule S.  How might we do this?

My sense is that in Quebec, this may have to be a paper submission after filing electronically for the first time? He tried to get into his Quebec account (similar to the CRA's "My Account") but the Quebec portal says it does not know anything about him.  (Perhaps the account is manually created when they process the first return filed in Quebec?)

Question 2: Any idea why TurboTax did not generate a Schedule S for our son?  As noted, this is his first year filing.

Question 3: Schedule C is odd.    I'm going to share specific figures, but it's in no way putting our son's financial credibility at risk.  There is a prefilled amount in line 2 that is 6,012.   One line 4 we enter the tuition amount taken from Box A of Quebec slip RL-8.  That figure is 7,646.  We add those together on line 6 to get $13,658.  On line 14, we entered his income taken from line 299 of his TP1.  That figure is $15,757.  On line 16, we calculate the amount to transfer by subtracting line 14 (15,757) from line 6 (13,658). This gives us a value of -2099. The form says to assign a value of 0 to line 16 if the value is negative. This means that none of the $7,646 is available to be transferred to a parent.   This is illogical because on his TP1, it clearly shows that his tax bill was eliminated entirely without using this tuition.   Chat has told me to ignore this and enter $7646 into line 16, but I'm skeptical. This said, the full amount should be available.

Thanks in advance for any insight into these three question,
Best,
Patrick

Does you son have an amount in box A of his RL-8 slip? Amounts can only be transferred if you received an RL-8 slip on which an amount is shown in box A.

The $6012 comes from the actual Revenue Quebec form: https://www.revenuquebec.ca/documents/en/formulaires/tp/2025-12/TP-1.D.S-V%282025-12%29.pdf

This Quebec website has information on How to create a Government Authentication Service account in order to use Quebec's My Account:

Thanks for your response.

You asked whether our son has received his RL-8.

Previously, I'd written.

I wasn't clear on next steps based on the response.   Is it possible to file an Amended return through TurboTax?  You provided a link to create an account with the Quebec government.  Is the answer to my question then, that it's not possible to refile from within TurboTax?

Any thoughts here?  As noted above, our son did receive an RL-8, but only entered information for the T2202.  At this point, I assume the creation of the Schedule S is triggered by entering RL-8 information - which he did not do.

Thanks in advance for any insight.

TurboTax not generating a Quebec Schedule S

In TurboTax Online (DIY), ReFILE is not available for Quebec residents. To ReFile, Request for an Adjustment to an Income Tax Return

https://www.revenuquebec.ca/en/online-services/forms-and-publications/current-details/tp-1-r-v/

Schedule S is specifically for the "Amount for Post-Secondary Studies" (which corresponds to Box A of the RL-8). This is a fixed amount per term (usually around $3,800+ per term) that a student can transfer to a parent to reduce the parent's Quebec tax.

Entering a T2202 only handles the Federal Tuition Credit (Schedule 11) and the Quebec Tuition Credit (Schedule T). It does not cover the specific Quebec "Post-Secondary Amount" (Schedule S).

To generate Schedule S and allow the transfer of that amount to you, your son needs to:

He must go to the "Federal Slips" or "Quebec Slips" section and find the RL-8 entry screen.

Enter the number of terms and the amount shown in Box A.

Once the RL-8 is entered, TurboTax will prompt him in the "Deductions & Credits" > "Students" section to complete Schedule S. He must explicitly indicate that he wishes to transfer the funds to a parent (and enter your name/SIN if prompted).

We replicated the scenario on our end and found no issues. Since the return has already been filed, the only option is to wait for the Notice of Assessment and then resubmit it to Revenue Quebec.

Thank you very much.  Your response directly answered all my questions. As you noted, having entered information from his T2202 resulted in his having an S11 (Fed) and a Schedule T (Quebec) generated.  This being his first year filing as a Quebec resident, he overlooked the significance of the RL-8 as it has not been relevant in previous years when filing as a Nova Scotia resident.

Per your note, he'll go back into either the "Federal Slips" or "Quebec Slips" section and find the RL-8 entry screen.  Then he'll enter the number of terms and the amount shown in Box A.  This will result in TurboTax to prompt him in the "Deductions & Credits" > "Students" section to complete Schedule S. He'll then indicate that he wishes to transfer the funds to a parent and enter my name/SIN if/when prompted.

And finally, he'll file an amended return by either first creating an account online (a process in and of itself) or submit a paper amendment using the fillable form available via the link you provided.

Merci beaucoup pour toutes ces informations!

Patrick
