First, please make sure that you have purchased the right product. The codes for TurboTax Online will not work with TurboTax Desktop & vice-versa.   Second, if you bought TurboTax at a retailer (Costco, Walmart, Staples, etc…), please make sure that you are using the code that came in the package. It may be on a slip of paper or on a scratch-off card. It is not on the outside of the box or on your receipt.   If you have bought TurboTax Online, please go to turbotax.ca/activate to use your code before you start your returns. You can see this TurboTax FAQ for step-by-step instructions: In TurboTax Online, how do I use a prepayment code? Please note that you can only use the code once in one account. Using the code again will give an error message.   If you have bought TurboTax Desktop, you will be asked for the licence code when you install the software. Please see this TurboTax FAQ for more information on the licence code: Where is my TurboTax licence code? You can download the current version of TurboTax Desktop edition here: Choose the current TurboTax Desktop edition you need (for Windows). You can download older versions of TurboTax Desktop edition here: Where can I download the Desktop edition of TurboTax?   If you are still not able to resolve your code issue, please contact our phone support team phone support team for more assistance.

@LB1621 For Box 25 & 34, enter your amount in the box that matches your situation best. For Box 53, one is for Foreign Capital Gains & the other is for Total Capital Gains.
We have passed on your comments & suggestions to our product development team. When we receive any updates, we will update this thread.    Thank you for using TurboTax.

I think I found the bug !!!   Had a T3 and inserted information in the Foreign income box (which I later deleted that information).  But I had put down source of Foreign income as "USA" (assumed this was for a US ETF.  Anyways, the fact that there is a Foreign Income "USA" noted, seems to trigger all of the self-employment/business income nonsense.   When I reset the "source of foreign income" drop down, to nil, then I could immediately file via NETfile.   An obvious bug in the software.

At the end of the process, I also get a "Tax Saving Opportunity". This seems to make sense except in Alberta. It would be great if the optimizing and opportunity stuff in Turbotax could please be enhanced to handle the provincial exceptions.   (grubbbee): Both you and your spouse or common-law partner have claimed amounts for donations. It may be beneficial for one person to claim all of the donations. Consider allowing all the donations to be claimed on the higher income spouse or common-law partner's return.

Bump.   Dear Turbotax. The only thing the Charitable Donations Optimizer has done for the past ten years for me is increase the amount of tax we have to pay. I agree with the original poster. Turbotax is fantastic mostly, but this is tool needs to be deleted entirely if it can't solve this most basic of problems.   1) In Alberta, the first $200 of donation gets a SIXTY PERCENT deduction. So with two spouses, basically the entire optimization algorithm, if you aren't carrying forward because you used up all your credits, is: Lower income spouse claims $200. Higher income spouse claims the rest, unless they are literally paying zero tax already. 2) As soon as I click Optimize, only to find this problem hasn't been fixed in over a decade, I now have to go return to the donations section in order to fix it. What a waste of time. Is this what I get for upgrading to premier?   Guys... what the heck? I have two words for you: C'mon...
